Middle School News:

January 28, 2013

Our second semester began with a round of debates. Students generate and finally vote on topics. Teams do not know if they are pro or con until a few days before the debate.

New fifth period classes, semester long courses with high school students, begin this week: (I’ll send you class descriptions tomorrow)

In February, eighth graders will start on their graduation project. They will choose a committee of teachers, mentors, parents and or peers to guide them through the 12-week process before they present to our community. This is a time for our graduates to celebrate the culmination of their middle school experience and explore something of their interest in depth. Seventh graders will complete two more independent projects. As usual, they are also expected to work outside of school on research and writing.
Thanks to everyone for helping make our Equal Exchange fundraiser a huge success. Proceeds will go towards our spring trip.

During the next few weeks, eighth graders will have an opportunity to spend a day in the high school and fifth graders will visit the middle school.

Looking ahead, this year is Art Month and we are planning a public show downtown. More details will be announced at a later date. If you are interested in offering a creation class in March to collaborate on an installation, please contact Ursina:
uheinz@sbcglobal.net. Check out the brief videos from our last exhibits, Suspension or Art Walk on our homepage: dev.harmonyschool.org – galleries, video galleries, 2010 Art Day or 2004.

Our yearly tradition to spend a day at Paoli Peaks will happen in the next two months. It will be rather spontaneous since we wait for perfect conditions with new snow and sunshine! If you would like to join us, please let us know. We‘ll send more information soon.

Happy New Year!
