From Jen’s Class

December 12, 2012

We are staying busy in the K-6 class. Lots of reading is going on, as usual. I have had a hard time getting into our new read aloud, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (which I LOVE), but I miss reading The Underneath so much!!! It is just one of those books that you finish and feel lonely without. If you haven’t read it, READ IT!!! Anyway, we finally finished our Tales from the Odyssey book club and will soon start a new book. I can’t decide between The Lightning Thief and the first book in The Hunger Games trilogy. Several students are continuing their work on letter sounds and sight words. All students continue reading independently in books of their choice. We have decided to set reading goals for every child in the class. These are all short-term (one month) goals that we aim to meet by our December holiday break.
Math has been a lot of fun. We have worked like crazy on number sense and addition. We have pulled out all the manipulatives. Over that last few weeks, we have been creating our own game boards for a game called Capture 5. It is a game that allows students to move around the hundreds chart in increments of +/- 1, 2, 3, 10, 20, and 30. Children have designed their game board and pieces.
We continue to have our own crazy adventures. We enjoyed a sleepover at school (on a school night)!!! During that evening we went on a field trip to Wildcare, learned about a number of the animals they are taking care of, and watched as Sam released a red bat back into the wilderness. When we returned from Wildcare we enjoyed a home-cooked meal (thanks to the many parents who supplied us with this) and baked, baked, baked for our Bake Sale that we held on the following day. We made close to $200 for Wildcare!!!!
November and December bring us into independent research time and getting ready for the Holiday Follies. We have lots of excitement ahead of us!!!
