HS – Feb – Emily

The Botany course has begun with some enthusiastic plant-lovers from the middle and high-school. We have begun by learning the anatomy of fruits, flowers and leaves to draw beautiful botanical illustrations, and we made some delicious fruit salads and bouquets with the leftovers! We have also started some cool-weather crop seeds in the greenhouse. The unseasonable weather has also allowed us to be outside pruning and getting various plantings around the school ready for spring. Students are also busy reading the book Botany of Desire and pondering the human connections to domesticated plants.

In Cells & Genes we have just constructed a giant cell model, to be on display at the Math & Science Expo at the end of March. We also experimented on some ―shell-less‖ eggs to observe osmosis across the egg membranes. 7

Chemistry students have installed their version of the Periodic Table of the Elements in the hallway outside our classroom; you should come upstairs to check it out because it‘s one of the few places you can see the table actually arranged in numeric order with the Lanthanide and Actinide series in their proper places. The chemists have moved on to playing with liquid nitrogen and dry ice studying the states of matter and differences in freezing and boiling points.
